Micro Four Thirds cameras came onto the market several years ago and offer a new class of camera that has DSLR advantages but in a smaller lighter footprint. One of the appealing aspects is the ability to change lenses which has been reserved for the larger bulkier DSLRs.
Minimum size, maximum beauty and overall great performance are what you will get from the Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera. It has an old school compact camera flare combined with innovative new school camera technology. Its compact size gives you the option to easily carry it around with you comfortably, but it still has the ability to capture beautiful powerful images that are the same quality of much larger cameras.
Old Style Compact Design
The design of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 is reminiscent of a classic OM series SLR camera. It has a tough magnesium alloy shell with weather sealing that makes it safe to use in any type of weather environment. Its compact body is lighter than most DSLR cameras and it also has a thumb hook in the back that you can use to improve camera stability.
16MP Live MOS Sensor & TruePic VI Image Processor
When combined with a wide lineup of M.ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses, the 16MP live MOS image sensor and TruePic VI image processor work to produce images of unprecedented quality. Still photos will be sharp and clear, while colors will be extremely vibrant with outstanding color fidelity. All of these features work well together to ensure that your favorite moments will be captured with the greatest resolution, sensitivity, and accuracy.
High Resolution 3’ Tilting OLED Touchscreen
One very special feature that you will notice on the Olympus E-M5 is the 3’ tilting OLED touch screen. The E-M5 is the first Olympus camera to offer this amazing feature. Not only can you use it to focus on your subjects, but is also provides high resolution play back of video and images. You also have the ability to make several image adjustments such as adjusting exposure and white balance settings, and you can even touch the screen to focus and snap an image in mere seconds.
With the electronic viewfinder, you will be able to enlarge your focus point for more precision focusing. You can also do real time experimentation with image effects such as white balance, exposure compensation, highlight & shadow control, aspect ratio, and more right in the viewfinder. The functionality of the EVF on this camera will give you unlimited creative control over image creations using art effects that you can see as you look through the EVF.
Fast Autofocus System
You will be able to capture those one of a kind moments in a snap thanks to the high speed Fast Autofocus system that has been built into this camera. It features 3D Tracking AF which allows the E-M5 to lock onto a subject no matter how much is moving, and the high sensitivity image sensor provides added support to ensure that even during dim light situations, AF performance will be just as reliable.
Splash Proof and Dust Proof
Part of the amazing external design of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera is the specially constructed seals that encompass the camera body. These seals have been designed to keep out dust, rain, water spray, and sand. This makes it an ideal camera to use in any environment and any weather conditions. The M.ZUIKO ED 12-50mm F3.5-63 EZ lens and bundled detachable flash unit also feature this type of protection as well.
– 9 FPS High Speed Sequential Shooting
– 5 Axis In Body Image Stabilization
– M.ZUIKO ED 12-50mm F3.5-63 EZ lens
– Interchangeable lens capabilities
Value for the Money
Some people may consider this camera to be a little on the pricy side, but you do get what you pay for. The Olympus E-M5 will give you high performance whether you are taking pictures in a very sunny environment or even in a dimly lit restaurant, and you get all of this performance from a camera that you can easily fit into your pocket.
Where to Buy
If you are looking for a great deal that even included free shipping, be sure to take a look at this camera on Amazon.com or B & H Photo.
Overall, I found the camera to be very simple to use with very few confusing features and easy to follow external controls. The finder menu is more complex, but with some foreknowledge the camera is useable by all. A very appealing camera.

I came away from this review trying to decide if DPS liked it or not. On one hand they applaud its RAW capability and on the other they admit that one of the primary reasons you would not buy it is that it’s too close to a DSLR and why not go ahead and spend the extra for a full frame DSLR.
