Are you a Eugene-Springfield area business owner who could benefit from receiving business calls on your personal phone? Or are you paying for an additional line? There is a way to do both, for FREE, through Google Voice.
Skeptical? We were too. Google Voice has become one of our most essential business tools. Google Voice is an additional line which can ring multiple phones and is basically a call-forwarding service.
Reasons Google Voice is a Good Business Decision
1. You Can Pick a Custom Phone Number
This means you set up a second phone line and can direct that line to ring your cell. This line is FREE. First, you choose the area code and then select from a list of available numbers.
2. Calling for Free
It’s simple. When you make domestic calls over wifi they’re free. When not using a wifi, you use your regular cell phone minutes. Google has made sure if you are calling international it is very cheap generally about 2 cents per minute.
3. Customized Voicemail Greetings
For your business callers they will think they have reached your “official business line” because you have personalized your Google Voice specifically for your business callers.
4. Call Screening
This is one of our favorite features! Your phone can be configured so that when you receive a “business call” you can answer it, send it to voicemail or listen in on the voice mail message as they leave it. Nice! We find often that as the person leaves their message, we discover it is someone we want to talk to so we “pick up” the call live.
5. Take a Vacation or a Break
Don´t want any business calls? Easy, just turn off your Google Voice number and all your business calls will go straight to voicemail and your personal calls will continue to ring your cell phone.
6. Silk Smooth Integration
Android, Blackberry, and Apple´s iPhone all have a Google Voice app that makes the entire process make you wonder why you didn´t do this sooner.
7. Business Voice Messages Transcribed
Your business calls will be transcribed into an email or text message. While not being perfectly accurate, it is a VERY cool feature for business owners. It allows you to look over a group of messages, especially if you´re looking for one in particular.
8. Our BEST Tip!
Know who’s calling by the ringtone you hear, without looking at the phone. It took us awhile to figure this out and we are happy to share it with you.
Here is how to do it.
On your cell phone go into “contacts,” add a new contact named “Business Line.” When you add the “Business Line” contact enter your Google Voice number and assign a unique ringtone to it. Now when you receive a call on your Google Voice “Business Line” your phone will ring with a special ringtone and you´ll know how to answer without even looking at the phone. SUPER HANDY! Lets take it one step further.
In your Google Voice admin area under “Settings”, under “Calls”, set “Call Screening” to ON! If you don´t answer your business calls they will be sent to your business voice mail on Google Voice. This tactic separates your business voicemail from your personal voicemail. If you don´t do this your business calls will be forwarded to your cell phone voicemail, which you won´t want!
Google Voice is the perfect solution for any situation where you want to keep your personal calls separate from your business calls.
